Ways to Use the Website

  1. The website can be read by the student outside of the class. The student should also read the other VKRP sites relating to the history of the Crusader and Islamic periods on the Karak plateau.

  2. Require the students to compose answers to the review questions or use the same questions in class.

Discussion and Review Questions

  1. Using information in this section (as well as those concerning the history of the Karak plateau in the Early Islamic, Crusader and Ayyubid-Mamluk periods) explain what makes Karak such a good location for a major fortification.

  2. What were the functions performed by the towers and the defensive wall around the town of Karak?

  3. What religious and civil buildings were constructed in Karak during the Crusader, Ayyubid and Mamluk periods?

  4. Compare the fortifications of Karak with other Muslim and Crusader castles in the Middle East.
