  • Relevant Topics would include discussions of the Scythians, Syria-Palestine in the Iron II period, the Moabites, Ancient Israel, the Assyrians, or ancient warfare.

    • How did a type of weapon invented by the Scythians come to be used in the Ancient Near East?

    • Where are the Scythians mentioned in the Assyrian records, Herodotus, or the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament?

Archaeology Courses on the Ancient Near East
  • Relevant topics would include units on ancient warfare in Syria-Palestine, technological development and spread in the Iron II period, the usefulness or uselessness of archaeological material for determining ethnicity or cultural identity
    • What types of weaponry were useful against ancient armor? Why were they useful?
    • How and why did technological developments spread in the ancient world?
    • Can archaeologists determine the ethnic group that created an object? What impact does cultural contact have on this question?

Cultural Anthropology Courses

  • Relevant topics would include discussions of ethnicity. 
    • Is ethnicity expressed through material culture? 
    • How does contact between distinct groups of people affect a group's material culture?
    • Can one speak of ethnicity?

Religion Courses on the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament including introductory courses and specialized courses on the historical books or the prophets

  • Relevant topics would include images of warfare in the Hebrew Bible or the prophetic view of other nations and cultures.
    • Who were the Scythians in the Biblical texts?
    • Why is warfare portrayed so vividly in the Bible- both figuratively and in the historical texts?
