Ways to Use the Website

  1. Download the outline for use in the classroom with the rest of the content being the basis for a lecture/discussion on the importance of roads for the Romans with the Via Nova as the example. And selected photos or video as desired for a PowerPoint presentation

  2. Use any of the photos or video clips separately to illustrate points in other lessons about Rome, Trajan, or the history of the region of Jordan

  3. Use the questions in the subsections in class for discussion on the importance and functions of roads to the Romans.

  4. Assign the whole module for out of class study to supplement other planned topics of study (e.g. the Roman Empire, Trajan, the Nabataeans, and the history of Jordan).

  5. Require written answers to the questions below or any of the questions in the subsections of the study

Discussion and Review Questions

  1. Why did the Romans build roads in general? Who built the main roads?

  2. What sources of information are available now regarding the time, methods, route, or reasons for the building of the Via Nova Traiana? Which of these is the most detailed or helpful?

  3. What earlier routes existed in the same general area as the Via Nova?

  4. When did the Romans build the Via Nova and why was it built at that time?

  5. How long did the Romans use the road and when did they stop?

  6. What modern cities or well-known ancient sites were on or near the Via Nova?
