This case study can be used in courses on ancient history to explain how the ancient people conceived of kings with respect to the land of their realm. It can tell about ancient agriculture, especially the crops grown on large estates.

The study can also be helpful in New Testament courses to explain the background to the Gospels. Certain parables such as Mark 12:1-8 may be better understood in light of this information. In addition, the general economic conditions of ancient Palestine may be more understandable in light of the growth of large estates and the scarcity of agricultural land for the peasants.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION:

  1. What relationship do political rulers in modern western societies have to the land in the countries they rule? How does this compare to the ancient near eastern rulers?

  2. Do you think your country has an agriculturally based economy or an industrially based economy? What about the ancient near east?

  3. What do you think life was like for peasants living on large estates in the ancient near east?
