Instructor Helps
This study is offered as an introduction to some of the
major geomorphological processes at work on the Karak
Plateau and the role that Remote Sensing and
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) can play in their
discovery and analysis. The material can be presented in
one or two classes. Before presenting the material in
class, students should read the Kouchoukos article (see
Bibliography) to introduce them to the science of using
satellite imagery. To present the material in class, use
the outline provided in conjunction with working through
the main web page and accompanying figures.
Possible Discussion Questions:
-
How did the physical environment contribute to the
independence of the Plateau's ancient inhabitants?
-
What is more important in developing the drainage
network on the Plateau today? The quantity or intensity
of rainfall?
-
How might tectonic features be identified in satellite
images?
-
How might GIS be used to study the impact of the
physical environment on the settlement practices of
ancient settlers?
