Glossary

  • Alluvial Fan - A fan-shaped, gently sloping mass of stream deposits laid down on a plain or valley floor.

  • Anticline - A ridge structure resulting from the folding of underlying rock layers. They are a common structure where rocks have been compressed by tectonic forces.

  • Delta - An accumulation of sediment at the mouth of a river or stream.

  • DEM (Digital Elevation Model) - A digital dataset that represents surface topography.

  • Ephemeral Channel - A stream that flows briefly during storm events.

  • Escarpment - A steep, eroded slope separating two surfaces located at different levels.

  • Fault - A fracture or fracture zone along which there has been displacement of the sides relative to one another parallel to the fracture.

  • Fluvial Processes - Produced by the action of a stream or river.

  • Fracture - A crack, joint, fault, or other break in rocks.

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) - A computer system for storing and manipulating data with a spatial component.

  • Geomorphology - The study of landforms.

  • Plates/Microplates - Rigid sections of the earth's lithosphere, which move and join other plates along zones of seismic activity.

  • Remote Sensing - The science of obtaining information about an object by a device that is not in contact with the object.

  • Rift Valley - A valley that forms along a tectonic fault zones.

  • Sapping - Sapping is the subsurface flow of groundwater along fractures in the bedrock.

  • Syncline - A trough-like structure resulting from the folding of underlying rock layers. They are a common structure where rocks have been compressed by tectonic forces.
